About us

Welcome to the Health Information Management Association of Australia’s (HIMAA) NSW Branch. HIMAA is the recognised, peak professional body of Health Information Managers in Australia.

The HIMAA NSW Branch Committee is made up of qualified Health Information Managers (HIMs) who are full members of HIMAA. Each member of the committee is committed to building a strong and sustainable HIM profession and volunteers their time to provide educational and networking opportunities to NSW’s HIMs.

The NSW Branch contributes to key National strategic discussions and acts as a liaison for its Special Interest Groups and members.

This website contains information and links on topics relevant to the HIM profession. It also provides up to date information on NSW HIM news and events.

The HIMAA NSW Branch Committee meets formally on a quarterly basis and is responsible for:

  • Contributing to key National strategic discussions and development
  • Providing information on and to the Profession
  • Acting as a profession liaison for Special Interest Groups
  • Organising Education/Professional Development and Networking Events
  • Supporting our future Health Information Managers
  • Acting as a profession liaison for tertiary institutions
  • Hosting an annual dinner

Melissa Turnell – Branch Convenor

Melissa is a qualified Health information manager who has over 20 years’ experience in the health industry.  She has worked in many different roles within the public NSW health system and also has over 10 years within the private health industry.

Melissa has been involved in her profession being actively involved in the PHSIG, mentoring students, providing information and support to HIMAA and more recently as secretary of the NSW HIMAA branch.  Melissa is CHIM certified and in 2019 was privileged to receive the award of NSW practitioner of the year.  She is an enthusiastic HIM and is currently working in the District Clinical Coding role for CCLHD.  She loves to help lead and motivate her team with providing education in a variety of ways to her team to help maintain a high level of quality coded data.


Kara Pollard – HIMAA Board Member Representative

Kara Completed a Bachelor of Health Science, Health Information Management at Queensland University of Technology. She worked in hospitals across Metro South Health (QLD) for 15 years before making a sea change to the NSW Central Coast.  Kara has a passion for digital health and education & training.  Kara is a Certified Health Information Manager (CHIM).


Kim Osborne – PD/Secretarial Support Officer

Kim completed a Masters in Health Information Management at Sydney University.  She was Acting HIM at Wyong Hospital before working as the Acting District HIM for the Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD).  Kim then moved into a role with Rolls Australia as their NSW/ACT sales representative and HIM consultant.  She successfully built up a coding service for them. Kim was with Rolls for 11 years before returning to CCLHD in 2019 to take up a role in Coding Education.


Jo Williams – Treasurer

Joanne is a Certified Health Information Manager (CHIM). Joanne’s qualifications include Associate Diploma in Medical Records Administration, a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and clinical coding qualifications undertaken through HIMAA. Joanne had worked as a Health Information Manager for over 15 years in Sydney before commencing employment at HIMAA as an Education Officer for medical terminology. It is not just a job but a passion which she has shared with her students for over 20 years. She is also editor of The Australian Dictionary of Clinical Abbreviations, Acronyms and Symbols. She has been involved with the NSW Branch since 2014, being Treasurer for much of that time. Jo would like to see more HIMs, clinical coders and clinical documentation specialists join HIMAA and more professional development and networking opportunities for all members in NSW, not just those in the Sydney region.


Cassandra Jordan – Careers Officer

Cassandra is committed to promoting tertiary education programmes in Health Information Management and advocating continued professional development for graduates. Cassandra’s particular areas of interest are management, leadership, human resources, health information systems, mentoring, teaching and governance.


Karishma Hurgobin –  Events and Website Officer

Karishma is a Certified Health Information Manager (CHIM), currently working for the Central Coast Local Health District as a Health Information Manager. Karishma graduated from Latrobe University (Victoria) in 2017 with a Bachelor of Health Science (Medical Classification) and a Bachelor of Health Information Management. Karishma has been working in health since 2015 and has worked in different health settings while in Victoria including large metropolitan public hospitals and rural hospitals


The NSW Branch Committee hosts three key events each year; a professional development event on a topic relevant to the profession, a trivia night – a favoured social evening for networking, and an annual dinner to celebrate our achievements from throughout the year.

Student's Section

A qualification in Health Information Management can lead you to a rewarding career in one of the most sought after expertise in the health sector. Not only will you be working with doctors, nurses and management to coordinate the flow of information throughout the hospital, you will also have the opportunity to work within one of the largest growing industries in Australia as more hospitals invest in innovations and research to improve quality.

The HIMAA Victorian Branch provides students with several opportunities to network with industry professionals, as well as information to further develop your knowledge and skills in health information management.
