This role is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation and delivery of the Clinical Coding Trainee Program, as well as educating personnel within the Health Information Services and other departments in clinical coding as required. In addition, this role acts as an internal point of escalation for clinical coders in the resolution of any coding queries and performs coding duties as required to support department KPIs.
Position Requirements: Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Capabilities
Essential
Qualifications: Completion of Bachelor of Health Information Management or completion of Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA) Clinical Coding Course (or equivalent)
Eligible for full or senior associate membership to HIMAA
Minimum 4 years clinical coding experience in a tertiary hospital utilising ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS 9th 10th and 11th Editions
Sound knowledge of AR-DRGs and casemix funding
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Sound Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills with proficiency in all other standard Microsoft Office products
Desirable / Non-Essential
Experience in delivering clinical coding feedback and targeted education to both junior and senior clinical coders
Experience developing education presentations, competency assessments, coding quick references/cheat sheets and other educational tools
Ability to systematically analyse problems or queries, draw relevant conclusions and recommend appropriate solutions
Excellent organisational, time management and prioritisation skills
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently as required.
Understanding of Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and its application to release of information in the private health sector
Knowledge and experience with private hospital billing
Key Accountabilities & Position Deliverables
1 EDUCATION
1.1 Develop, implement and deliver the Clinical Coding Trainee Program
1.2 Coach, mentor and develop clinical coding staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding, competency assessment and education
1.3 Act as in internal point of escalation for any coding and documentation queries, providing targeted feedback to Coders, Clinical Documentation Specialists and Medical Officers to improve their knowledge of disease processes, procedures, coding standards/rules, AR-DRGs, and national/local business requirements
1.4 Develop presentations and quick reference guides/tools to support the clinical coding team with accurate and complete clinical code assignment
1.5 Support the Clinical Coding Supervisor with the development and delivery of monthly education sessions to the clinical coding team
1.6 Liaise with Regional Coding Auditor and Educator to ensure ongoing alignment with organisational objectives
2 AUDIT
2.1 Support the Clinical Coding Auditor with delivering an internal clinical coding audit program, identifying non-compliance with Australian Coding Standards/National and State coding advice, over/ under coding and documentation deficiencies with the aim of optimising AR-DRG allocation to accurately reflect patient complexity
3 CODING
3.1 Consistently demonstrate the ability to appropriately assign accurate and timely coding of diagnoses and procedures using current coding standards and practice including:
ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS 9th 10th and 11th Editions
National/State coding advice
Clinical Coding Practice Framework (previously Standards for Ethical Conduct in Clinical Coding)
3.2 Assist the Clinical Coding Service with coding outstanding records to support the ongoing achievement of department KPIs
3.3 Identify documentation deficiencies and liaise with Clinical Documentation Specialists, Medical Officers, clinical staff and administrative staff to
obtain accurate information to facilitate coding
4 OTHER
4.1 Assist with other duties as directed by the Manager of Health Information Services and/or Clinical Coding Supervisor
