Health Information Manager / Clinical Coder
Ballarat Health Services
Part time – Fixed Term until 30/06/22
30.4 hours per fortnight 

Position Purpose:

The Health Information Manager / Clinical Coder role involves accurate clinical coding of inpatient episodes whilst achieving a set throughput quota. It is expected that the person in this role will not require any training or supervision in coding but training will be provided in the use of our digital record and Patient Administration System.

Key Accountabilities

Clinical Coding

  • Minimum 5 years coding experience with high complexity episodes, including Intensive Care.
  • Accurately code inpatient episodes in accordance with Australian Coding Standards
  • Meet standards of coding accuracy and volume relative to experience
  • Proactively participate in further training opportunities to improve/increase coding skills.  Be receptive to and       incorporate feedback regarding coding performance.
  • Identification of documentation deficiencies and subsequent generation of coding queries.
  • Participate in coding audit, quality and education activities relative to experience.
  • Identify opportunities to improve coding quality and maximise WIES/NWAU funding


  • Compliance with all BHS Policies and Procedures.
  • Adherence to infection control policies and procedures as identified in the Ballarat Health Services Infection Control Manuals.
  • Participation in the BHS integrated risk management and quality improvement systems by being aware of responsibilities to identify, minimise and manage risks and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement in your workplace through communication and consultation with managers and colleague
  • You must ensure that the affairs of Ballarat Health Services, its patients, clients and staff remain strictly confidential and are not divulged to any third party except where required for clinical reasons or by law.   Such confidentiality shall extend to the commercial and financial interests and activities of Ballarat Health Services.

Our fantastic coding team is comprised of both HIMs and Clinical Coders who work in an environment where coding, casemix and clinical documentation initiatives are strongly supported by BHS Executive and Clinical Directors. You will be supported by the Coding Leadership Team to further develop your coding skills.
